Farewell to a King: Remembering Boomer, the Greater Vancouver Zoo’s Most Famous Resident

The Greater Vancouver Zoo community is in mourning this week following the passing of Boomer, the beloved 18-year-old African lion. A fixture of the Aldergrove facility for nearly two decades, Boomer’s journey from a backyard pet to a local icon was a story of resilience that touched thousands of British Columbians.

A Charmed Life After a Wild Start

Boomer’s story sounds like something out of a movie. In 2008, as a mere cub, he escaped from a private enclosure in Quebec, causing a media frenzy as he roamed the woods for several days. After his capture, it was discovered that he had been kept as an exotic pet—a practice that Barkcouver and the Greater Vancouver Zoo have long advocated against.

Because he could not be released into the wild, the Greater Vancouver Zoo became his sanctuary. Over the next 18 years, Boomer became the “face” of the zoo’s conservation and education programs, helping to teach generations of visitors why exotic animals belong in the wild, not in our backyards.

The Heart of the Pride

Known for his regal mane and booming roar that could be heard across the 120-acre park, Boomer lived a full life well beyond the median life expectancy for lions in the wild.

In his later years, he was a peaceful leader of the pride, often seen lounging in the sun with his companions, Prim and Tess. Zookeepers remember him not just as an apex predator, but as a gentle soul who formed deep bonds with his caretakers.

A Legacy of Advocacy

Boomer’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy continues through the zoo’s recent rescue of Pumpkin, another young lion saved from inappropriate conditions.

At Barkcouver, we believe that every animal deserves a voice and a home where they are respected. Boomer’s life served as a living testament to the importance of strict exotic animal laws in British Columbia, laws that Boomer himself helped inspire after his “Quebec odyssey” nearly 20 years ago.

Rest in power, Boomer. The Aldergrove sunsets will not sound the same without your roar.
