John Hendry (Trout Lake) Park
About
While John Hendry Park is huge, the off-leash area is a massive, dedicated zone on the north end of the lake. This is not just a “field”; it’s an entire ecosystem for dogs. It features a sprawling, unfenced grassy meadow that leads directly into a designated “dog beach” on the lake.
Because of the fresh water (no salt or sand to wash off later!), this is the premier spot for dogs that love to retrieve balls from the water. It is a high-energy, high-socialization park where you will find hundreds of dogs on a sunny weekend. It feels like a massive outdoor festival for canines, complete with willow trees, muddy paths, and wide-open spaces for the ultimate game of chase.
💡 Barkcouver Tip
The “Trout Lake Mud” is legendary. After a rainstorm, the area near the water’s edge can become a swamp. If you have a white dog, bring towels!
Insider Move: Keep an eye on the water quality signs. Because it is a small lake, the city occasionally issues “No Swimming” advisories during hot summer months due to algae or bacteria. Always check the posted signs near the beach before letting your pup dive in!
